Custom Graphite Product Machining — 6 Features OEMs Specify First

A custom graphite part only earns its place if the features are specified before the quote. OEMs that switch from metal to graphite learn quickly that six features decide cost, quality and life — and that skipping any one means rework. This article lists the six features to put on the drawing first, so the custom part arrives right and stays right.

Jiecheng Graphite (since 2003) machines custom graphite parts and asks for exactly these six features on every drawing.

Feature 1 — grade and grain

The grade sets everything: finish, strength, thermal behaviour and price. State the intended grade or the duty it must survive, and let the supplier confirm it.

Feature 2 — tolerance and finish

Confirm per-feature tolerance (±0.02 mm class where critical) and surface finish in Ra. A blanket figure hides where the real control is.

Feature 3 — temperature and atmosphere

State the operating temperature and whether the part sits in air, vacuum or inert gas. This decides CTE, oxidation and purity requirements.

Feature 4 — load and fit

Define the mechanical load and the mating fit. Undersized sections crack; oversized clearance rattles. Give the real numbers.

Feature 5 — quantity and repeatability

A single prototype and a production run machine differently. State the batch size and whether re-orders must match exactly, so the spec is frozen.

Feature 6 — inspection and traceability

Ask for an inspection report and material certificate per batch. Jiecheng Graphite (100+ five-axis CNC, 3,000 m² plant) records every batch so a re-order matches the first.

Where custom parts are used

· EDM and sink electrodes

· Furnace and vacuum components

· High-temperature fixtures and jigs

· Semiconductor and process tooling

Buying checklist

1. Send the drawing with grade, tolerance and finish

2. State temperature, atmosphere, load and fit

3. Confirm quantity and repeat-order policy

4. Request inspection report and material certificate

5. Freeze the spec before production

FAQ

How much does custom graphite machining cost?

It follows the six features — grade, tolerance, size and quantity dominate; a complete drawing gets an accurate quote.

Can you machine a part to ±0.02 mm?

Yes on fine-grain graphite; confirm the achievable tolerance per feature with the supplier.

Do I need a prototype first?

For critical fits, a prototype before production saves rework; confirm lead time.

Quoting custom parts accurately

An accurate quote follows a complete drawing. Give the supplier the grade, tolerance, finish, temperature, load, quantity and inspection requirement, and the price reflects the real work. Leave those blank and the quote is a guess, and the rework is on you. Complete information is what turns a custom part into a controlled cost.

· Grade, tolerance and finish on the drawing

· Temperature, atmosphere, load and fit stated

· Quantity and inspection requirement included

The difference between an accurate quote and a surprise is the drawing. Jiecheng Graphite asks for the same six features on every custom job, so the price, the part and the lead time all match the specification.

The practical rule for custom parts is to give the supplier every feature you can before the quote. A complete drawing costs nothing to send and saves the most in price, lead time and rework, so both sides work from the same specification from the first order.
